The Department of Journalism has two great special topics courses with seats available that are open to students of all majors. Both courses are online.

JOUR 199: Social Media

In this online course, you will develop an understanding of how social media works and explore the impact of social media on society. You will also learn how social media is used to promote journalism to reach a broader audience, as well as ways social media can be used to undermine journalism. This section will be taught asynchronously and is open to all majors.

JOUR 280: Advanced Editing for Student Media

Want to get more out of your student media experience? Via weekly critiques and brainstorming and problem-solving sessions, this very professionally focused, the seminar-style online course seeks to help editors at independent student media develop more effective strategies for leading efforts to produce professional, compelling, and enterprising news coverage and for addressing unique challenges and opportunities present in modern student media.

No specific classroom experience is required, but students enrolling in this experiential learning course should have some ongoing role with an independent, student-run media organization. Please note: Instructor will be in contact with an online synchronous (live) meeting time, but the course will likely meet Thursdays in the late afternoon or early evening. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Email Professor Eric Meyer (ekmeyer@illinois.edu) for permission to register.
