Battery Recycling Program

September 15, 2026

Starting January 1st, 2028, batteries will no longer be allowed to be disposed of in the landfills and must be collected for recycling per the Illinois Portable and Medium-Format Battery Stewardship Act (SB3686).

The School of Chemical Sciences has offered battery recycling for the past few years and will continue to do so in participation with this act. Any batteries that are eligible for recycling can be dropped off to the SCS Facilities and Safety office (16 RAL). Staff in the office will screen the batteries to ensure compliance with the collection protocols so please do not leave batteries in the office unattended.

The school encourages everyone to begin establishing collection protocols within your respective offices and labs so that battery recycling will become routine by 2028.

Below is a list of the batteries that can be collected and instructions for which types need to have their terminals taped prior to recycling.
