Seven types of compressed gases are kept on hand in Roger Adams Laboratory and are available for purchase by SCS researchers.
The locations of these gases are listed below:
- Room 33A (closet next to Room 33): Oxygen
- Room 35 (Liquid Nitrogen Room): Air and Nitrogen
- Room 64B: Argon, Carbon Dioxide, Hydrogen, and Helium
Access requirements: Rooms 33A and 64B require a keycode for access. An existing member
of your research group should provide the appropriate code during onboarding. If no one in
your group knows the code, email scs-facilities@illinois.edu to request access.
Checking Out a Gas Cylinder
Researchers who need to purchase a compressed gas cylinder should follow these steps:
- Secure the cylinder to an approved transfer cart. Carts are available to borrow in Rooms 35 and 64B.
- Complete the “Gas Cylinder Issue” card and place it in the designated box in the alcove next to Room 33. Be sure to complete all required information so the cylinder can be accurately billed and inventoried. The “Gas Cylinder Return” card will be provided in the sleeve with the cylinder. Keep this card until the cylinder is ready to be returned.
- Transport the cylinder to the desired location after the issue card has been submitted.
- Return the transfer cart immediately if you borrow one from Room 35 or 64B so that it remains available for other researchers.
Returning a Gas Cylinder
When a cylinder is empty or otherwise ready to be returned, follow these steps:

- Complete the “Gas Cylinder Return” card and place it in the designated box in the alcove next to Room 33.
- Return the cylinder to one of the designated return areas outside the building:
- Primary return area: Just outside the double doors next to the Liquid Nitrogen
Room. - Secondary return area: Around the corner to the right of the primary return
area.
