Minor Requirements for Chemistry & Biomolecular Engineering

CHEMISTRY MINOR (for students starting at Illinois in Fall 2015 or later)

COURSE REQUIREMENTSHOURS

CHEM 102, 103, 104, & 105 or
CHEM 202, 203, 204, & 205

*Labs must be completed to satisfy the minor; students cannot have labs waived or take a proficiency exam to satisfy the lab requirement.

8-10
CHEM 232 & 233 or
CHEM 236 & 237
5-6

Two 3-4 credit hour Advanced Chemistry courses (300 & 400 level Chemistry courses, NOT INCLUDING research or independent study) The two courses should be from different subdisciplines of Chemistry. For example, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry.

See below for courses commonly taken to complete the minor (a) and for a list of courses that DO NOT count for the minor (b)

6-8
TOTAL:19-24

At least two 3-4 credit 300-400 level Chemistry courses. The following advanced Chemistry options are suitable for most students pursuing the minor:

CHEM 312 (Inorganic Chemistry)3 hoursFall/Spring
CHEM 332 (Organic Chemistry II)4 hoursFall/Spring
CHEM 360 (Environmental Chemistry)3 hoursSpring/Summer
CHEM 440 (Physical Chemistry Principles)4 hoursFall/Spring

Some of the courses above are restricted to Chemistry majors through the priority registration period.

NOTE: In line with the Office of the Provost’s guidelines, declared minors are not granted priority registration for required courses. Furthermore, SCS advisors cannot provide access to courses that are closed or restricted to majors only.

Courses that DO NOT count toward the minor: CHEM 315, CHEM 317, CHEM 397, CHEM 420, CHEM 437, CHEM 445, CHEM 447, CHEM 494, CHEM 496, CHEM 497, and CHEM 499; MCB 354, MCB 450, or BIOC 455. No courses that are not CHEM or cross listed as CHEM will count towards the chemistry minor.

The Department of Chemistry cannot guarantee minor completion.

Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering majors are not eligible for the Chemistry minor.
